As the mantle is very brittle after burning it is essential to check the mantle before use and ensure that there are no holes in it. If the mantle is damaged it must be replaced before use. Using a damaged mantle may crack the glass globe or damage the lantern. it is a good practice to always keep a spare packet of mantles. Directions: Tie mantle around groove of burner cap. spread fabric evenly around burner cap so it does not touch any part of the lantern. light mantle with gas turned on slightly allowing it to burn completely. open the cylinder valve further until mantle forms the correct shape. ( This may take a few minutes, the mantle will reduce in size considerable, change color slightly and stop smoking when burnt off. ) close the cylinder valve. Mantle is now ready for use. Precautions: burn off new mantles outside or in a well-ventilated area as they generate a considerable amount of acrid smoke burnt off mantles are fragile and brittle. Do not touch as holes or fractures may result. always check the condition of your mantle before lighting your lantern. Holes and fracture can cause excessive localised heat which will damage lantern parts or glass.
